St. Cecilia, Pray For Us!

It is hard to believe, but it has been about two months since I joined the choir as the Choir Director. As we approach the feast day of St. Cecilia, I want to take a moment to express my gratitude to the choir, instrumentalists, and everyone who contributes to the liturgy with music.

In a very special way, I want to recognize Mary Borys who has been gracious enough to volunteer her time as accompanist during weekly choir rehearsals. Mary has been incredibly helpful in learning the music and helping the choir learn their various parts.

I also want to thank Norm Andresen (bass guitar), Chandler Kozlowicz (sound system), Chase Kozlowicz (drums), Patrick Lahiff (flute), Mary Rothermal (flute), Greg Thole (drums), the New Spirit Singers, and all of the members of the choir for their tireless hours and dedication to the ministry that everyone enjoys so much. And I could not possibly forget Bob Amore who has been a staple of the music ministry here for… I think I heard him say seventeen years? And on more than one occasion, I have heard people say that they have watched him grow up as he maintained his steadfast service as part of the ministry. Thank you, Bob, for your years of service and the opportunity for me to be part of the Music Ministry.

I started coming to Our Lady of the Woods almost four years ago; at the time, I was looking for a new spiritual home as I had just left St. Roch in Flat Rock. Convenience (relative location to home) brought me to Our Lady of the Woods. The Music Ministry bid me to stay. I cannot help but wonder if the Spirit was working behind the scenes.

As time has passed, some of our musicians have moved on, but always come back and play with the ministry when they are in town. It is truly a blessing to be involved in this ministry with so many talented and dedicated people. Not everyone knows this about me, but I work two jobs and typically put in enough hours every week for two full time positions. When I stepped into the role of Choir Director, it was with a fair amount of trepidation. How would the choir respond to me? Could I juggle this additional demand on my time? Would I be good enough? What is the Italian translation for mf again? (I do have a background in music; so it has been a lot of fun digging music theory out of the dustier areas of my memory.)

I am so happy to say that I was welcomed with open arms to the choir from the very beginning. Little did I know that I would soon be “temporarily” filling the role that Paul vacated when he moved on. And the choir, as they well know, has been a source of fun, relaxation, and spiritual development. If you are being called to join us, we would be happy to welcome you just as I was welcomed. And in the meantime, St. Cecilia, pray for us!

God bless, Jason
